Calves are born wet, have very little body fat and thin skin, they can lose body heat very quickly and only have about two hours of stored energy in brown fat and what is left in the stomach. The AgriDirect Calf Jacket will help very young calves to regulate their temperature thus reducing stress, and energy wastage keeping warm.

Older calves, still under 30 days old, are still vulnerable to sudden temperature changes. If the calf is cold, energy will be diverted to maintaining temperature and away from growth. Many variables can affect the temperature for the calf.

Outdoors cold, wet, and/or windy weather conditions can have deadly consequences for young calves, AgriDirect Calf Jacket should stay on for 3 to 4 weeks until the calf is strong enough. Under 21 days old calves outside should be protected once the temperature drops below 15°C. If it falls below 10°C  calves up to 42 days old should be protected with an AgriDirect Calf Jacket when outside. 

In sheds temperature can be hard to maintain early in the year. Bedding can be thin or damp, sheds can be draughty, illnesses can easily spread in the confines of sheds, all reducing the calf’s ability to keep warm.
